Farm Worker Duties
SUMMARY
This is manual work of a skilled nature in the performance of
moderately technical farm tasks.
Work involves efficient performance as a lead man over other
farm workers, or independent performance of moderately
specialized farm operations. Skilled operation of varied farm
equipment is often required. Work is performed under the
supervision of a foreman or technical supervisor who issues
general or specific orders and instructions depending on the
work involved. All work is subject to inspection while in
process and upon completion, although at times an employee of
this class may work with only limited supervision in the
performance of regular duties at an assigned experiment station
or other university farming operation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Works as lead man and general farm laborer on an institutional
farm; performs varied farm work such as raising livestock and
poultry, plowing, harrowing, pruning, cultivation, fertilizing,
irrigating, and harvesting farm crops from assigned plots and
acreage.
Obtains and records information as directed by the superior.
Operates heavy construction equipment such as motor bulldozer,
grader, and drag line in connection with the construction and
maintenance of levees, irrigation ponds, and farms roads, and in
cutting ditches, pushing trees, and clearing and leveling land
for use in farming operations.
Participates in the installation, repair, and maintenance of
electrical and mechanical equipment; performs carpentry,
plumbing, and painting tasks.
Participates as lead man of a small crew in the planting,
cultivation, and harvest of field crops, vegetables, and fruit
from assigned plots and acreage; secures fruit, vegetable, leaf,
and other samples for laboratory analysis.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school; and
experience in general farming, including the skilled operation
of tractors and other heavy equipment; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of general farm operations, such as
plowing, planting, fertilizing, irrigating, spraying,
cultivating, harvesting, grading, and storing of various crops.
Considerable knowledge of modern methods and techniques in
raising livestock and poultry.
Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a
variety of farm implements, machinery, and equipment, including
heavy construction equipment used in various jobs such as
excavating, loading, grading, and related work.
Some knowledge of the hazards and safety rules and precautions
in the use of heavy construction equipment.
Ability to care for and maintain sanitary living quarters for
livestock or poultry.
Ability to lead and instruct other farm laborers in general farm
operations and maintenance work.
Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, implements, and
machinery used in farming and related operations.
