Forestry Worker Duties
SUMMARY
This is field work in the operation and maintenance of
institutional forest lands.
An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for
the operation and minor maintenance of vehicles utilized in
timber harvesting and other forest operations. Work also
involves the performance of a variety of forest resources skill
and assisting in research and teaching programs. Work is
performed under general supervision of a technical superior and
is reviewed through periodic inspection.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs field forestry work such as, but not limited to,
planting, marking for timber sales, cutting timber for sale,
cutting timber or undesirable trees for stand improvement,
girdling or injecting trees for stand improvement, plowing fire
lines, fighting wild fires, cutting diseased or insect damaged
timber, clearing an building facilities for campgrounds and
recreation areas, clearing and planting wildlife feeding areas,
and assisting in timber inventories.
Assists in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges,
and other facilities to include minor carpentry and plumbing.
Operates and performs maintenance on trucks, chain saws, farm
tractors, road graders, log skidders, and related forestry
equipment.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and
considerable experience related to this class of work; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of general forestry operations.
Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a
wide variety of forestry implements and equipment.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety requirements in forestry
operations.
Ability to operate a wide variety of forestry equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
Ability to work long hours at hard manual labor under varied
climatic conditions.
Ability to perform minor repairs, periodic maintenance, and
adjustments on equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with faculty, staff, and fellow employees.
