SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to support university staff, faculty, and students in the safety of laboratories, facilities, equipment, etc., by ensuring compliance with safety/health regulations through inspection, testing, consultation, coaching, training, recommendation, and other methods. Activities and decisions are varied in nature, requiring the solving of both common and unusual problems. This position's supervisor is consulted for clarification of policies only where needed.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform inspections of campus food service operations, and sporting events

Inspect laboratories for chemical and safety hazards, indoor and outdoor campus swimming pools

Perform testing and balancing of fume hoods

Participate in special projects

Develop and implement procedures as it relates to safety/health regulations

Review building plans for compliance

Assist state and local health departments in conducting disease investigations

Act as contact person for onsite septic system installations and repairs assisting in
site evaluations and system inspections

Prepare and generate reports

Respond to odor complaints, chemical spill, and laboratory clean-outs

Act as safety consultant to the research community concerning unusual or
difficult questions as it relates to laboratory and chemical safety

Participate as a member of the Hazardous Materials Response Team

Supervise students
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in health physics, industrial hygiene, or physical, biological, or environmental health science; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Driver's License required; certification in an applicable environmental safety area preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations and standards

Ability to read, and interpret journals, codes, and laws

Ability to present information to management and groups

Knowledge of laboratory, chemical, food, and health safety

Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals

Ability to prepare and generate reports
