Steam Equipment Mechanic Duties
SUMMARY
This is skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and
replacement of complex and sophisticated steam systems and
related equipment and components.
Work is performed under general supervision of an allied
foreman, but an employee of this class would be expected to
diagnose system problems and perform corrective action
autonomously. Duties may include giving guidance to lower-level
mechanics and/or assistants in work methods and techniques.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Diagnoses and corrects complex control system defects and
malfunctions, utilizing cutting torches, welding equipment, and
a wide variety of hand tools.
Performs preventive maintenance on a variety of hand tools.
Performs preventive maintenance on a variety of boilers, heat
exchangers, pumps, and auxiliary equipment.
Performs inspections on associated equipment to ascertain degree
of wear and to anticipate necessary repairs.
Assists in the fabrication of parts and devices which cannot be
open-purchased due to antiquated or esoteric nature.
May order materials and supplies incident to repair and/or
replacement.
May maintain a simple set of records regarding work performed.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Literacy and considerable experience in the operation and
maintenance of a high pressure steam system; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of high psi
steam heating plant.
Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards of high psi steam
plant.
Ability to instruct and supervise the work of subordinates.
Ability to read and understand schematics of steam generating
system.
Skill in the use of a wide variety of hand and power tools. |
