Design Engineer Duties
SUMMARY
Performs administrative and professional engineering work in the
identification of requirements, budget development, design,
scheduling, coordination, and supervision for major repairs and
renovations of campus structures, including buildings, utilities
and roadways.
This individual is responsible for supervising and participating
in preliminary studies and estimates of proposed projects, and
in the design and preparation of complete alteration and repair
plans for existing buildings or structures. Work also involves
the development and design of new construction projects.
Responsibilities usually include supervision of a small staff of
technical designers and estimators. This individual makes
technical decisions and exercises considerable initiative and
creativity within the scope of policy directives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Confers with appropriate faculty, administrative personnel, and
design professionals regarding proposed construction, alteration
programs and plans and project design.
Conducts condition assessments of roofs throughout the campus to
identify candidates for repair and/or replacement and identifies
and prioritizes selected projects for reroofing.
Plans, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of
architectural and mechanical designers, design estimators, and
other personnel engaged in planning, designing, cost estimating,
and ordering materials and equipment for repair and alteration
projects and new construction.
Participates in the more complex and difficult assignments;
advises and counsels with subordinates while work is in
progress.
Supervises and participates in the preparation and maintenance
of cost records which are used in preparing cost estimates of
new projects.
Schedules pre-bid conferences, bid dates, and mobilization dates
for reroofing projects. Conducts pre-bid meetings,
pre-construction meetings, observations, job-site meetings and
acceptance inspections.
Reviews bid proposals, evaluate contractor qualifications, and
recommend bid awards.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree with major course work in mechanical
engineering, structural engineering, and/or experience in
professional engineering work with emphasis on architectural
planning and designing, including some supervisory work; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the modern principles and practices of
engineering and architecture, of modern building alteration,
construction methods and materials, and the preparation of
estimates and specifications.
Ability to review, analyze, and make recommendations regarding
designs, plans, and specifications.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of technical and
professional subordinates.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
Ability to interpret and carry out complex instructions
including the reading and interpretation of blue prints and
specifications.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with university faculty and administrative
