Nutrition Research Specialist Duties
SUMMARY
This is responsible professional, administrative, and research
work in the management and operation of a nutrition research
laboratory. Work is performed under general direction of a
professional policy committee and performance is measured by the
observation of results obtained.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans and directs the activities of a interdepartmental
laboratory engaged in animal, dairy, and poultry nutrition
research.
Prepares and administers the budget.
Consults with laboratory users on the feasibility of various
types of analysis in research planning.
Advises and assists laboratory users on analytical aspects in
the preparation of journal articles and other publications.
Requisitions and maintains necessary laboratory equipment and
supplies.
Maintains appropriate safety regulations and procedures and
orients laboratory personnel in proper safety precautions and
devices.
Serves on the animal nutrition policy committee and maintains
appropriate committee records.
Implements new methods of analysis and research.
Hires, trains, and evaluates laboratory staff.
Maintains appropriate analytical and quality control standards.
Keeps abreast of new developments in analytical procedures and
techniques.
Schedules samples and maintains cost records.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a
masters degree in biochemistry and considerable experience in
nutritional research including some supervisory laboratory
experience; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the field of clinical chemistry.
Considerable knowledge of clinical chemistry techniques, tests,
and procedures.
Considerable knowledge of nutritional research developments,
methods, and techniques.
Knowledge of research methodology.
Knowledge of laboratory hazards and safety requirements.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of others.
Ability to perform a wide variety of complex experiments and
laboratory procedures.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations
with others.
