Licensed Practical Nurse Duties
SUMMARY
This is advanced technical nursing work in supervising the care
and treatment of the physically and mentally ill.
Work involves responsibility for planning and supervising the
work of subordinate and technical nursing service personnel in a
patient unit. Work includes responsibility for making patient
rounds to review and participate in the work of subordinates and
give required instruction. Unusual problems in patient care and
treatment are referred to a professional nursing or medical
superior. Employees receive general instructions regarding
institutional policies and practices from professional nursing
and medical superiors and work is subject to review by
observation of results obtained.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises and participates in the care and treatment of
physically and mentally ill patients on an assigned unit or
station; makes rounds with nursing and medical superiors;
prepares and administers medications orally, rectally,
hypodermically, and intra-muscularly as ordered by licensed
physicians.
Makes periodic rounds of unit; checks to see that subordinates
are on duty, that patients are properly cared for, and that
quarters are in good condition; makes assignments according to
demands for service and gives instructions concerning changes in
working policy.
Plans for and admits new patients, orienting them to hospital
services and routines.
Investigates complaints regarding the conduct, attitude, and
performance of employees supervised.
Assists subordinates and oversees their work in preparing and
serving trays, shifting and moving patients, giving bed baths
and rubs, giving irrigations and catheterization, and preparing
and giving other medications and treatments.
Maintains a variety of records and prepares required reports.
Interviews new patients and orients them to the services of the
family planning program; assists the physician in the physical
examination of patients.
Performs Pap smears and string checks on follow-up patients as
indicated; performs the routine lab experience in the care and
treatment of patients.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school, supplemented by
completion of an approved training program in practical nursing
AND minimum 1 year applicable clinical nursing experience; OR
any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Employees in this classification must be registered as a
Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Georgia.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of modern theory and practice in
practical nursing.
Considerable knowledge of human anatomy as it relates to the
administration of hypodermic injections and to treatments and
therapies.
Some knowledge of the more common physical illnesses, obvious
symptoms, and appropriate medical terminology.
Ability to follow oral and written directions in exact detail.
Ability to respond to each patient empathetically and
respectfully while carrying out the treatment prescribed for
him.
Ability to maintain and interpret nursing records and reports.
Skill in the application of practical nursing techniques.
