Library Assistant Duties
SUMMARY
This is the first level of a six-level series. This position
performs basic tasks in acquiring, organizing, preserving, or
interpreting information resources that support a specific
library, archives, or records process. Responsibilities are
straightforward and performed within a well-defined, highly
structured, prescribed set of parameters. Employees at this
level exercise limited independent judgment in determining
methods or procedures to be used in making minor decisions. A
person in this position may assist in training and/or monitoring
student assistants. Contacts may be within the unit/department
or within Libraries to expedite the processing of materials and
information. There may be occasional contact with a diverse
patron population to provide general information about unit or
general library operations and services. Work is performed under
close and direct supervision.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Acquiring: participates in effective acquisition of materials
for the libraries by physically preparing or receiving print or
digitized materials for functions such as interlibrary loan
requests.
Organizing: Participates in maintaining standards and expanding
scope and content of information resources at the Libraries by
performing such duties as sorting, shelving, transporting,
photocopying, or processing.
Interpreting: Provides routine public service to patrons on-site
and off-site by following established procedures for obtaining
access to library materials and performing tasks that facilitate
this access.
Preserving: Assists in addressing the general preservation needs
of the libraries general and special collections by
understanding appropriate standards for care and handling, by
maintaining awareness of and reporting evidence of damage.
Provides a safe environment for library materials and users by
knowing and performing the duties as outlined in the library
emergency procedures.
Supervising: Contributes to the mission and goals of the
Libraries by maintaining the operation of a Unit in the absence
of a supervisor following normal policies and procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED and 6 months of library or related
clerical/customer service experience required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Limited knowledge and application of standard or specialized
library systems.
Skill in verbal and written communication.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software.
Ability to occasionally lift and move heavy materials and
equipment.
