Cartographic Shop Manager Duties
SUMMARY
This is responsible supervisory and technical work in a
photographic laboratory engaged in developing, reproducing, and
printing a large variety of maps, charts, diagrams, displays,
photographs, and other graphic arts. An employee allocated to
this class of work is responsible for supervising laboratory
personnel engaged in cartographic drafting and photographic
reproduction. Work is performed under general direction of an
administrative superior and is reviewed through the observation
of results.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises the planning and execution of photographic
reproduction including negative preparation, opaquing, slide,
and print production.
Trains and gives technical direction to laboratory personnel in
the operation of a wide variety of photographic equipment which
includes film processors, copy cameras, and saltzman photo
enlargers.
Maintains appropriate photographic standards of clarity and
legibility.
Instructs personnel on drafting and mapping reproductive
techniques.
Prepares maps, charts, diagrams, and other graphic art work for
publications.
Keeps abreast of new equipment, film, and photographic
processes.
Prepares work orders and monthly billings.
Requisitions supplies and orders equipment.
Provides advice to university personnel on photographic and
cartographic techniques, specifications, and problems.
Maintains appropriate inventories, files, and records.
Performs minor repair and maintenance on photographic equipment.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school, and
thorough experience related to this class of work; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of photographic techniques, equipment, and
materials.
Considerable knowledge of cartographic techniques and design.
Considerable knowledge of photographic equipment and
maintenance.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with university personnel.
Skill in the use of a wide variety of cameras and photographic
processing equipment.
