Sales Assistant Senior Duties and Responsibilities

Purpose of Classification:

Performs activities associated with selling, stocking and ordering merchandise in a retail or sales operation. This includes a wide variety of specialized functions such as acquiring and utilizing specialized knowledge of specific merchandise, ordering responsibilities, assisting buyers and preparing reports. Incumbents may have leadership duties, exercise judgement within prescribed limits and work with independence to accomplish tasks. Consults supervisor for complex problems or issues requiring supervisory approval.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

This is second in a series of three classifications. It is distinguished from the Sales Assistant by leadership duties, specialized knowledge, a wider variety of functions and/or by a higher level of independence in carrying out work activities.

Examples of Duties:

  • Coordinates the activities of subordinates.
     
  • Informs customers regarding technical or specialized merchandise.
     
  • Schedules students or temporary workers for rush periods.
     
  • Trains and coordinates the work of temporary or new workers in selling, stocking and ordering merchandise.
     
  • Assists in planning and coordinating special promotions by ordering supplies and merchandise, scheduling needed staff and preparing signs.
     
  • Provides input to decision-making processes for buyers or managers on merchandising techniques, new products, competitive pricing or promotional ideas.
     
  • Compiles data for reports such as promotional event success evaluation or special inventory counts.
     
  • Performs duties of the Sales Assistant classification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of merchandising or sales techniques.
     
  • Knowledge of cataloging and inventory techniques.
     
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
     
  • Skill in dealing with the public and customer service techniques.
     
  • Skill in coordinating works activities of others.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience in sales and stocking merchandise; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
