Asbestos Inspector Duties
SUMMARY
This is journeyman level work in the repair, maintenance, and
removal of various types of materials containing asbestos.
Work involves the performance of asbestos abatement operations
in accordance with established procedures and in compliance with
regulatory agency guidelines. Assignments are made in the form
of written or oral instructions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs abatement work on boilers, steam pipes, HVAC duct,
chill water pumps, pipes and fittings, fume hoods, heat
exchangers, sprayed-on wall and ceiling materials, and VAT
flooring to remove and/or control asbestos fibers.
Utilizes established methods and procedures to ensure safety to
self and others and compliance with regulatory agency
guidelines.
Sets up asbestos containment barriers and negative air equipment
as necessary.
Performs abatement procedures utilizing a variety of tools and
equipment (e.g., negative air equipment,
HEPA units, sprayers, hand and power tools such as drills,
chippers, sanders, brushes, hammers, etc.)
Identifies potential safety hazards in work areas and takes
appropriate action to ensure safety to self and others.
Disconnects and removes pipe, lab equipment, fume hoods, and the
like as necessary to implement abatement procedures.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school, on-the-job
training in asbestos abatement; or any equivalent combination of
training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods,
materials, and tools of asbestos abatement.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of
the work.
Ability to work from oral and written instructions, sketches,
and diagrams.
Ability to work effectively while wearing protective respiratory
equipment.
Ability to work from ladders and scaffolds.
