Maintenance Machinist Duties
SUMMARY
Performs machine shop work of the journeyman level in the
fabrication, maintenance, and repair of metal components and
equipment. Handles the installation, repair and maintenance of
pumps (vacuum, air, water, etc.) and other miscellaneous
machinery.
This individual is responsible for completing assignments in the
construction, assembly, maintenance, and repair of a wide
variety of metal parts, tools, models, and equipment that
require a high degree of accuracy and precision. Work may
involve limited design responsibilities. Although work falls
principally in the machinist's trade, the employee is expected
to employ some skills of the electric, plumbing, and welding
trades. Job requirements, on occasion require work beyond normal
duty hours resulting from emergency or high priority work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manufactures a wide variety of metal components through the
operation of lathes, shapers, milling machines, drill presses,
and similar equipment, gauging work carefully by using precision
tools, fabricated mechanical devices, and units.
Operates carpentry and welding equipment and uses hand tools in
the fabrication of mechanical devices; maintains and repairs
mechanical equipment and prototypes; operates soldering
equipment; installs machine shop equipment.
Makes jigs and fixtures.
Repairs and maintains machine shop equipment; repairs precision
instruments; gear boxes, air compressors, and pumps.
Replaces shafts, bearings, bushings, belts, shear-pins, pulleys,
and gears.
Designs, manufactures, and repairs certain scientific research
equipment.
Perform associated electrical work and/or plumbing work required
for maintenance and repair of pumps and other equipment.
Performs other work as required in support of general
maintenance activity.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED; 4 years of experience in the trade
which may include an apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational
training and should include some experience as a journeyman
machinist; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials,
methods, and standard practices of the machinist's trade.
Considerable knowledge of the maintenance and repair of machine
shop tools and equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of
the trade.
Some knowledge of the carpentry, plumbing, and welding trades.
Ability to work from plans, blueprints, sketches, models, and
oral or written instructions, and to exercise judgment in
determining techniques and methods.
Skill in the use and care of tools, machinery, and equipment of
the machinist's trade. |
