Sheetmetal & Roofing Foreman Duties
SUMMARY
This is skilled roofing work involving the supervision of a
group of skilled roofers and trades helpers engaged in
re-roofing and roofing systems maintenance, installation and
repair work.
An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for
planning, organizing and directing the operational activities of
the roofing shop and supervising personnel. Work is performed
under the direction of an administrative superior and is
reviewed through inspection while in progress and upon
completion.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans, organizes, schedules, supervises, and inspects the work
of skilled roofers and trades helpers engaged in covering roofs
with roofing materials, and oversees the installation, repair,
and maintenance of roofing systems.
Schedules work and assigns duties to workers and confers with
appropriate administrative personnel on matters regarding
scheduling of required manpower.
Reviews and evaluates roofing shop roofers and trades helpers
work progress; and oversees related administrative functions
such hiring and writing annual performance evaluations of
roofing shop jobholders.
Inspects re-roofing, and related roofing work such as the
installation, repair and maintenance of roofing systems while
work is in progress and upon completion to determine conformance
to specifications; and performs infrared and thermal inspection
of roofing systems to determine water infiltration.
Evaluates and determines requirements and roofing material needs
for various projects and orders materials for specific projects.
Prepares progress reports regarding type of repairs made,
materials used, and cost of completed work assignments; and
consults on future projects with engineers.
Develops in-house roofing specifications, reviews architect
drawings and specifications for capital funded projects; and
writes specifications for contract maintenance work.
Maintains maintenance and roof system warranty logs and meets
with bonding company representatives regarding roofs under
warranty.
Meets with roofing contractors and oversees contractors
performance to ensure conformance to specifications.
Performs related as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school and
experience as a journeyman roofer, including a minimum of five
years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination
of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools,
and practices of the roofing trade.
Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety
precautions of the construction trades.
Ability to effectively supervise skilled workers and trades
helpers.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to make and project material and labor needs and costs.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and
orally.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with employees and other university personnel.
Skill in the use of standard tools and equipment of the trades.
