Tree Surgeon Duties
SUMMARY
This is journeyman level work in the pruning and general care of
trees and shrubs to improve their appearance, health, and value.
Work involves the performance of skilled tasks in accordance
with standard trade practices of tree surgery. Duties are
performed independently, subject to inspection in progress or
upon completion.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Cuts out dead and undesirable tree limbs and trims trees to
enhance their beauty and growth.
Scrapes decayed matter from tree cavities and fills holes with
cement to promote healing and prevent further deterioration.
Tops trees to control growth and prevent interference with
utility wires.
Fells and removes trees and bushes.
Plants trees and shrubs.
Operates a variety of equipment such as a bucket, chipper, chain
saw, truck, and tractor.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school and
some experience as a tree surgeon or completion of an
apprenticeship in this type work; or any equivalent combination
of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the proper methods for pruning and
felling trees.
Considerable skill in operating the tree bucket for maximum
access to trees.
Skill in operating chain saws and other tools.
Skill in the use of safety ropes.
Ability to determine the amount of tree surgery work to be done
and the best methods for accomplishing it.
