Mechanical Designer Duties
SUMMARY
This is technical work in the designing and developing of plans
for mechanical systems installations and alterations of existing
university buildings.
An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for
planning, designing, and drafting detailed specifications of
mechanical systems such as air conditioning, heating,
ventilation, and electrical wiring. As assigned, duties include
alterations of present systems and plans, and designs involving
new buildings. Work includes important contacts with personnel
from the several university departments and material and
equipment vendors. Work orders are received in writing.
Assignments consists of specific projects and normally includes
instructions as to general policies and procedures, but the
employee is expected to make technical decisions within the
scope of these instructions. Work is reviewed by inspection
while in progress and upon completion.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Discusses requirements of job requests with appropriate
officials; conducts surveys to gather data needed in design
preparation; prepares preliminary design sketches and a cost
estimate for labor, material, and equipment.
Prepares final designs and specifications; including a complete
layout of the duct work, vents, and types of equipment and
controls, electric service lines, and other appurtenances.
Performs the drafting work required for each project.
Refers completed designs to superiors for review, alteration,
and approval.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school
supplemented by two years of additional course work in a
technical school, college, or university with major course work
in drafting and mechanical engineering, and considerable
experience as a draftsman and mechanical engineering technician;
or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the basic principles, methods, and
practices involved in the design of mechanical systems for
buildings.
Considerable knowledge of equipment and material required for
the efficient operation of mechanical system.
Considerable knowledge of the terminology, methods, practices,
and techniques of mechanical drafting.
Ability to prepare designs and specifications for material and
equipment needs of mechanical systems.
Ability to prepare complex schematic drawings from rough
sketches, survey data, and oral instructions.
Ability to understand and efficiently carry out complex written
and oral instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with university personnel.
Skill in the design and preparation of drawings and
