Postal Services Assistant Duties
SUMMARY
This is responsible supervisory and clerical work in a
university mail room. Individual is responsible for supervising
employees assigned as Postal Services Assistant I, and
processing outgoing as well as incoming mail. Work involves
determining correct rates and amounts of postage for mailings
and maintaining a variety of clerical records related to this
process. Work is performed under general supervision but within
specific guidelines. Work is reviewed on the basis of efficient
results.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises employees assigned as Postal Services Assistant I.
Weighs, rates, classifies, and affixes postage to outgoing mail
from units of a university, Enters postage charges on mail
statements and inputs this data utilizing a computerized batch
billing system to charge back postage charges to the using
departments.
Assists departments in preparing bulk mailings. Verifies ZIP
zone sorting according to postal regulations.
Sorts and bags bulk mail, tags and marks mail bags, and
completes the postal forms required.
Disseminates information regarding postal regulations, policies,
and procedures.
Sorts incoming mail by route and prepares for delivery.
Processes postage due mail; readdresses mail; maintains records
of registered, certified, and insured mail; cleans and maintains
postal machines and related equipment.
Substitutes as delivery clerk on occasion.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school, supervisory experience
and some experience related to this type of work; or any
equivalent combination of training or experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to supervise a group of employees and work flexible
hours as necessary.
Extensive knowledge of postal rules and regulations pertaining
to the receipt, processing, and delivery of mail and parcels.
Ability to decipher handwritten addresses.
Ability to deal with patrons in a pleasant and courteous manner.
Ability to make routine arithmetical computations quickly and
accurately.
Skill in maintaining a variety of clerical records. |
