SUMMARY

Supervises an operational area of the transit system. Occasionally drives buses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

An employee allocated to this class of work supervises the scheduling and dispatching of university owned buses with drivers to routes as requested by the several departments and organizations of the university. Duties include the recruitment, training, assignment, and supervision of bus drivers and dispatchers, arranging for the repair and safe operation of the buses, and preparing cost estimates for projects requiring the use of buses. The employee is also responsible for the maintenance of records of equipment and operator utilization. Work is performed under general direction of an administrative superior and is reviewed through discussion and inspection of operations.

This is responsible administrative and professional work in the planning, development, implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive driver training program for University bus operators.
Work involves curriculum design, development and maintenance of master lesson plan files, maintenance of training records, delivery of driver training classes, and liaison with regulatory agencies. In addition, may serve as Bus Operations Foreman, perform dispatch duties and operate a bus as assigned or necessary.

An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for establishing uniform practices and policies relating to motor vehicle repair and maintenance, and assisting in deciding the serviceability and adequacy of the equipment. The employee keeps records and supplies information used in maintaining various vehicle records. Supervision is exercised over a staff of skilled and semi-skilled workers. Work is performed with considerable independence within the general framework of policies and programs established by the Transportation Superintendent and is reviewed largely through the reactions and comments of the several departments served by the garage, by personal inspection, and by review of reports and records.
