Asbestos Environmental Safety Specialist Duties and Responsibilities
Purpose of Classification:
Oversees and manages regulatory compliance elements related to lead
and asbestos including the development and maintenance of required
written programs. Identifies and supports environmental
sustainability initiatives.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is
a specialized class and not part of a series.
Examples of Duties:
- Conducts ambient and personnel monitoring related to
potential ASU employee exposure to lead and asbestos.
- Audits activities associated with implementation of written
compliance programs.
- Develops training and communication related to asbestos and
lead containing materials and environmental sustainability
efforts.
- Conducts training for affected departments on lead and
asbestos compliance and sustainability programs requiring EH & S
related training.
- Maintains records required by written programs and prepares
reports for management on status of programs.
- Serves as a resource for evaluation of potential
environmental sustainability efforts proposed by departments.
- Prepares and presents a variety of regulatory required
training programs to ensure ongoing compliance with established
standards.
- Assists Facilities Maintenance and Operations identify
sustainability initiatives.
- Monitors and tracks metrics related to environmental
sustainability including recycling efforts and supervises
student interns. Wears personal protective equipment (e.g.
safety glasses, face shield, negative pressure respirator,
gloves); walks and inspects campus in extreme temperatures;
drives university vehicles; communicates effectively both
verbally and in writing.
- May participate in training programs involving adherence to
program regulations, including annual tuberculosis testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the safe and appropriate use of all personal
protective equipment.
- Knowledge of EPA and OSHA standards, requirements and
regulations for asbestos and lead.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices and standards of
environmental sustainability.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices and standards of
organizational management.
- Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
- Skill in identifying and conducting regulatory required
monitoring.
- Ability to apply principles and standards of project
management.
- Ability to establish goals, timelines, set priorities,
organize and coordinate work activities of self and others.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in
writing.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Environmental
Sciences or closely related field AND four(4) years
administrative/coordinating program experience, Master's degree
preferred with two (2) years prior experience administrating and/or
coordinating an environmental safety education program; OR, Eight
(8) years of progressively responsible administrative/coordinating
program experience. Successful completion of a Respiratory Clearance
and Asbestos Physical Exam and Respirator Fit Test post offer of
employment as well as a current and valid AZ Driver’s License
required.
