Medical Technologist Duties
SUMMARY
This is technical and analytical work in performing standardized
tests and examinations in an assigned clinical laboratory.
Work involves performing a variety of standard serological,
bacteriological, hematological, or biochemical laboratory
examinations and tests. Work is performed independently within
established procedures and guidelines. Work is reviewed through
observation of performance and results of work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs a variety of bacteriological examinations for the
presence of various diseases and pathologic conditions.
Prepares a variety of culture media for the development and
identification of organism.
Stains slides, examines microscopically, and reports findings.
Makes chemical analysis of blood to determine the quantitative
presence of chemical components.
May perform toxicological tests on patient and control samples.
May perform complex extraction procedures.
Makes chemical analysis of urine specimens and does special
procedures as required.
Obtains blood samples by venipuncture and fingerstick.
Performs hematological examination such as making complete blood
counts, smears for differential count, blood grouping,
determining sedimentation rates, and bleeding and clotting time.
Prepares technical reports including procedures and results of
laboratory tests and examinations.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor degree with an appropriate number of quarter hours in
a relevant science to be ASCP eligible for the appropriate
categorical exam when experience criteria is met plus an
approved Clinical Laboratory Technologists exam plus two (2)
years experience; or Medical Technologists ASCP eligible; or
Categorical (ASCP) registration.
Categorical (ASCP) registered, if applicable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, materials,
equipment, and techniques of medical technology.
Considerable knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry,
biology, and bacteriology as related to medical technology.
Ability to perform assigned tasks according to exactly
prescribed procedures and to make accurate observations and
records of test results.
