Utility Worker Duties
SUMMARY
This is manual laboring work of more than ordinary difficulty
often involving the performance of semi-skilled duties.
Work involves the performance of laboring tasks requiring some
job acquired skills which frequently include operating
automotive equipment and providing semi-skilled assistance to
trade workers. Duties which are of a routine nature are
performed with some degree of independence; the more skilled
tasks, however, are performed under closer supervision. An
employee may drive a truck and some light construction
equipment, involving responsibility for safe and efficient
operation. Specific instructions are normally received with
assignments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates a truck hauling laborers, furniture, freight, material,
and equipment; participates in loading and unloading trucks;
checks condition of truck and reports needed adjustments and
repairs; services equipment; operates and cleans milk tank
truck.
Performs manual and semi-skilled tasks in assisting a skilled
worker including tree pruning, threading pipe, painting
buildings, unstopping drains, repairing windows and doors, and
replacing locks.
Drives a truck hauling trash and garbage; participates in
loading and unloading freight.
Operates light construction equipment such as a small tractor.
Digs ditches; sets stakes and strings; places and mortars cement
blocks; mixes, cements, and patches walks; helps run water and
sewer lines.
Performs general laboring tasks in mowing grass, cleaning
grounds, walks, and buildings, and gardening work.
Opens and collects oysters; collects shrimp; and cleans boats.
Separates and stores laundry; issues athletic equipment.
Waters golf tees; sprinkles fairways; hauls soil; spreads lime;
rakes sand traps; cuts brush.
Packages cheese; freezes ice cream; washes creamery equipment.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Some experience in performing semi-skilled manual work and in
vehicle operation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written
instructions.
Ability to operate light trucks and related equipment and to
perform semi-skilled manual tasks.
Ability to use a variety of standard hand tools.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, often under adverse
climatic conditions.
