Fire Equipment Technician Lead Duties and Responsibilities
Purpose of Classification:
Inspects, repairs, and maintains fire safety equipment and systems
in accordance with applicable fire codes. Working conditions include
restricted movement, dirty environment, air contamination, lifts or
carries heavy objects.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is
second in a series of four classifications and is a journey-level
position responsible for inspecting more complex fire safety
equipment and systems, including halon and stove hood systems.
Examples of Duties:
- Coordinates the activities of Fire Equipment Technicians.
- Inspects halon and stove hood systems.
- Inspects, repairs, and tests fire extinguishers using hand
tools, hydrostatic test equipment, and monitoring devices.
- Dismantles extinguishers and examines mechanical parts,
extinguishing agents, and expelling means; replaces worn or
damaged parts.
- Cleans extinguishers and recharges them with approved
materials.
- Inspects, tests, and repairs systems such as smoke
detectors, sprinklers and dry stand pipe systems, and pull
systems.
- Maintains records of all inspections, tests, repairs, and
remodeling of extinguishing systems.
- Assists in fire safety inspection.
- Assists in inspecting building, investigating fires,
evaluating fire hazards, and hazardous materials as required.
- Advises departments of the need, uses, and types of fire
extinguishers.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of inspection, repair, maintenance, and testing
techniques for fire safety equipment and systems.
- Skill in the inspection, repair, maintenance, and testing
techniques for fire safety equipment and systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
Five
years of experience in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of
fire safety equipment and systems; OR, Associate's degree in Fire
Science AND three years of experience in the inspection, repair, and
maintenance of fire safety equipment and systems; OR, Any equivalent
combination of experience and/or education from which comparable
knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
