Resume Writing Advice The word resume comes from the
French word resume, which means "to summarize". Your resume is a
summary of your qualifications, and its purpose is to persuade
the prospective employer to invite you in for a personal
interview. It is a document that communicates the highlights of
your education and work experience to the potential employer. It
should present your value as a potential employee, and convince
the reader that you are well suited to succeed in performing the
responsibilities of the position under consideration. As you
write, remember that an employer is interested in the continuing
success of his or her organization. Therefore, the theme of your
resume needs to focus on what you can do for the employer, by
placing emphasis on skills and accomplishments that you are
bringing to the job. Think of your resume as a sketch or
snapshot of yourself that you would like the employer to see.
Your resume should also serve as a self-assessment tool, an
opportunity to complete a self-inventory and see where you have
been and where you would like to go. Creating your resume allows
you to evaluate your experience and determine your career goals.
