Origin: Allegany County was formed in
1789 from Washington County (Chapter 29, Acts of
1789). Allegany comes from the Indian word,
oolikhanna, meaning "beautiful stream."

about 3,141 counties and county equivalents in
the United States. It has 425.4 sq. miles in
land area and a population density of 173.1 per
square mile. In the last three decades of the
1900s its population declined by 10.8%. On the
2000 census form, 99.3% of the population
reported only one race, with 5.3% of these
reporting African-American. The population of
this county is 0.8% Hispanic (of any race). The
average household size is 2.35 persons compared
to an average family size of 2.90 persons.
In 2005 health care and social assistance was
the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an
average wage per job of $33,095. Per capita
income grew by 13.4% between 1994 and 2004
(adjusted for inflation). |
