Horticulture Assistant Duties
SUMMARY
This is responsible para-professional work in the field of
ornamental horticulture. Considerable independent judgement must
be exercised by the employee with direction from a
Horticulturist if needed. Work is performed under general
direction of a Horticulturist and reviewed upon completion.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides professional advice on the selection, ordering,
planting, culture, and maintenance of trees, shrubs, ground
covers, and turf grasses.
Assists in planning and designing annual and perennial flower
beds.
Assists in the production of bedding plants, potted plants, and
nursery stock and maintains records on the growing operation.
Training and supervising subordinate personnel in the proper
methods and techniques of planting ornamental plants.
Trains grounds personnel in the techniques of pruning, wound
dressing, cavity repair, and the cabling and bracing of trees
and shrubs.
Assists in preparing acquisitions for various types of plants
and seeds.
Assists in supervising the processing of accessioning
deaccessioning, mapping, relocating, and labeling plants in
collection areas.
Assists in the preparation of maintenance programs for the
control of plant diseases and insects.
Assists in preparing fertilizer programs for various types of
plants.
Performs related duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited college or university in an
appropriate curriculum and considerable experience related to
this class of work; or any equivalent combination of training
and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of ornamental horticulture in all phases.
Knowledge of plant propagation and cultivation.
Knowledge of the principles of greenhouse and nursery
management.
Knowledge of the principles of supervision.
Knowledge of the elementary principles of landscaping.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
