Poultry Worker Duties
SUMMARY
This is manual work of some difficulty as a lead worker in
specialized farming activities on a poultry farm.
Work involves serving as a lead worker and participating in a
variety of unskilled and semi-skilled poultry related tasks in
accordance with specific instructions. Specialized tasks such as
para-veterinarian cases are assumed by the incumbent. Direction
is exercised over other poultry workers and work completion is
reviewed through inspection.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as a lead worker over poultry workers.
Maintains proper lighting and heating for poultry pens and
incubators; puts shavings in hens nests.
Feeds, waters, and otherwise cares for poultry; cleans poultry
houses, pens, feeders, water receptacles, boiler rooms, and
sheds.
Keeps and checks records on mortality of poultry, feeding of
poultry, and other information needed for research on poultry;
prepares poultry for operations or inoculations; sterilizes
hatchery equipment.
Repairs and paints sheds, barns, and fences; loads and unloads
feed.
Collects and washes eggs, candles and stores eggs in coolers.
Performs para-veterinarian functions such as diagnosing common
diseases and appropriate treatment to poultry; draws blood and
necessary samples.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of the eight school grade; and varied experience in
poultry farm work; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of practical farm operations.
Considerable knowledge of the feeding and care of poultry.
Considerable knowledge of the kinds and uses of poultry raising
supplies and equipment.
Some knowledge of common poultry diseases and their proper
treatment.
Ability to operate basic farm tools and equipment such as
trucks, tractors, and mowers.
Ability to make simple mechanical and carpentry repairs to farm
equipment and buildings.
Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written
instructions.
Ability to lead the work of others.
