Animal Caretaker Duties
SUMMARY
This is manual work in the care and feeding of laboratory
animals.
Work involves caring laboratory animals in accordance with
specific directions received from a superior. An employee in
this class feeds and waters the animals, transfers animals from
cages, and cleans the cages, rooms, and adjacent areas. Duties
may include simple preparation of foods according to prescribed
formulae, including the weighing of component parts, but does
not involve technical work in dietary experimentation. Work is
performed under general supervision and is reviewed through
observation of the animals and the cleanliness of the cages,
rooms, and adjacent areas.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Feeds, waters, and cares for laboratory animals including rats,
mice, hamsters, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens,
ducks, and fish.
Cleans the cages, rooms, and adjacent areas.
Prepares food according to prescribed formulae; grinds and mixes
food according to precise specification and weighs component
parts.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of the eighth grade; and some experience in caring
for small animals; or any equivalent combination of training and
experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of the feeding and care of laboratory animals.
Ability to perform routine tasks in the care and feeding of
small animals.
Ability to perform custodial tasks related to sanitation and
cleanliness of cages and premises.
Ability to read, understand, and interpret simple written and
oral instructions.
Skill in handling and caring for small animals. |
