Computer Data Base Specialist Senior Duties and Responsibilities
Purpose of Classification:
Analyzes, develops and implements requirements for major database
and data communications facilities involving complex structures.
Provides technical support to programmers and analysts in the use of
data base software systems.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is
second in a series of three classifications. Employees in this class
serve as technical experts in data base design and management.
Incumbents provide technical assistance to lower level personnel.
Examples of Duties:
- Analyzes and designs data base formats for computer systems.
- Develops specifications for data access controls for systems
to ensure security standards and usage are properly followed.
- Develops methods for improving data base/data communications
performance and response times.
- Provides specifications for programming tasks associated
with data base standards.
- Advises application programmers and analysts concerning data
base/data communications requirements.
- Performs data base reorganizations, software maintenance,
and the integration of data base structures; recommends data
base modifications.
- Performs data base recovery in the event of loss.
- Installs and maintains vendor supplied data base software;
tests and coordinates implementation procedures.
- Recommends data base standards to management.
- Investigates and corrects data base integrity problems.
- Specifies system and user documentation requirements.
- Ensures the security and integrity of all production data.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of principles, practices, developments, and
techniques used in systems analysis, applications programming,
and data base/data communications technology.
- Knowledge of the functions and capabilities of data base
systems.
- Skill in the use of the programming and job control, and
data defining languages specific to the assignment.
- Skill in both verbal and written communication.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field AND three
years of systems and/or applications programming experience; OR,
Associate's Degree in Computer Science or related field AND four
years of systems and/or applications programming experience; OR,
Five years of systems and/or applications programming experience;
OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from
which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
