SUMMARY

This is responsible technical and inspection work in the transport and disposal of chemical and radioactive wastes according to established Environmental Safety Services standards and procedures.

This individual must maintain current knowledge of frequently changing regulations and guidelines that affect the packaging, transportation, and storage of hazardous wastes. Activities and decisions are varied in nature. Unusual cases or questionable matters are resolved with this position's supervisor or other appropriate positions. Assignments are reviewed for compliance with established hazardous materials guidelines and regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Generate manifest, schedule pick-up, and transport hazardous waste

Classify, prepare, and consolidate hazardous materials for removal and transport.

Packages chemical and radioactive wastes for shipment in accordance with applicable EPA, DOT, NRC, state, and university procedures and regulations

Member of HazMat team

Assists in maintaining records reflecting quantities of various waste chemicals; inspects waste shipping containers for adherence to regulations, standards, and guidelines, and for damage and/or leakage

Performs related work as required


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree and driver's license required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of applicable procedures and guidelines

Ability to provide training to researchers regarding waste management, packaging, and pick up

Ability to work with researchers, university officials, staff, and various governmental officials in coordinating hazardous waste programs

Ability to respond to situations involving hazardous materials, to effect clean up and containment, and to avoid and/or reduce hazard
