Farm Equip Mechanic-Operator Duties
SUMMARY
This is skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and
operation of farm tractors and related farm machinery on an
institutional farm.
Work involves responsibility for maintaining, repairing, and
operating farm tractors, combines, sprayers, balers, harrows,
and related farm equipment. Employees work under the general
supervision of a farm superior and use independent judgement
concerning farm equipment operations and repairs needed
according to the operating condition of the piece of equipment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans and carries our a program of preventive maintenance of all
farm machinery.
Repairs and overhauls farm tractors, combines, bulldozers,
mowers, sprayers, and saws.
Operates a variety of farm equipment such as tractors to plow,
plant, cultivate, spray, mow, bale, and perform other farming
operations.
Repairs transmissions, brakes, steering columns, clutches, and
other parts of farm tractors.
Performs emergency repairs in the field and checks machinery
while in operation.
Maintain records on equipment and supplies.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school; and
considerable experience in the repair, maintenance, and
operation of farm tractors and related farm machinery; or any
equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and standard
practices of farm mechanic trade.
Considerable knowledge of the principles of internal combustion
and diesel engines.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of
the trade.
Ability to diagnose defects, and to repair farm tractors and a
variety of farm machinery.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written
instructions.
Skill in the operation of farm equipment.
Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment employed in
the repair of farm equipment.
