Grounds Foreman Duties
SUMMARY
This is supervisory and skilled work in the construction,
maintenance, and care of campus grounds other than streets,
driveways, and parking lots.
An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for
planning work operations and methods, and for assuring the
technical correctness of functions performed by subordinates.
The major responsibility of the work in this class is the care
and maintenance of campus grass areas, shrubs, trees, and other
plants. Supervision is exercised over several small crews of
skilled and unskilled grounds workers. Work is usually performed
with considerable independence with periodic review by a
superior for results obtained, changes in work methods, and
adherence to departmental policies.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans, assigns, schedules, and supervises several small crews in
the construction, maintenance, and care of campus grounds,
grass, shrubbery, trees, and other plants.
Follows landscaping blue-print plans in the planting of trees,
shrubs, and flowers, and seeding grass areas.
Supervises the treatment of grass, shrubs, trees, and other
plants with proper fertilizer, fungicide, and pesticides.
Instructs and trains employees in the safe operation of
equipment and tools, and in the application of chemical sprays.
Prepares time and other required reports.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school; and
considerable experience in public parks construction and
maintenance projects including some supervisory experience; or
any equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of materials, equipment, tools, methods, and
techniques used in public parks construction, repair, and
maintenance.
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the
work.
Ability to lay out, direct, and supervise construction and
maintenance projects.
Ability to delegate and give clear and concise directions to
subordinates.
Ability to understand and efficiently carry out written and oral
instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with university employees.
Ability to keep records and to prepare work and time reports. |
