Medical Lab Manager Duties
SUMMARY
An employee allocated to this position oversees provision of
laboratory services for UGA students and eligible members of the
University community. Work also includes supervising laboratory
staff including medical technologists and support staff as well
as developing policies and procedures in accordance with
policies and regulatory requirements. This employee manages
Laboratory Information System (LIS) and reports to the Assistant
Director for Support Services as well as consults with the
Laboratory Director concerning technical issues.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrates competence in applicable professional skills.
Participates in continuing professional education.
Provides for infection control, right-to-know updates, safety
reviews including fire, tornado, security and bomb threat for
self and staff.
Demonstrates understanding and skill in information management,
performance improvement principles, mission, vision and values
and age specific and medical emergency response, if applicable.
Maintains competence to perform laboratory technical procedures.
Performs tasks of staff medical technologist during periods of
peak workload and in absence of staff members.
Administers the use and functioning of the LIS, acts as a
liaison between UHC IT staff and LIS vendor support.
Assists clinicians in the appropriate utilization of laboratory
services and interpretation of results.
Evaluates new tests, methodologies, and instrumentation.
Recommends appropriate course of action.
Coordinates UHC hazardous material disposal with UGA Hazardous
Materials Program, Division of Public Safety. Maintains UGA
Chemical Inventory Reporting System (CIRS) for UHC items in
stock.
Manages laboratory-confirmed Notifiable Disease Reporting to the
State of Georgia Epidemiology Department.
Serves on the UHC Environment of Care Committee.
Oversees phlebotomy and microscopy instruction for medical
students during their clinical practicum at UHC.
Arranges provision of laboratory services for UGA research
projects.
Coordinates provision of laboratory services for athletes with
the UGA Athletic Department and the UHC Sports Medicine
Department.
Provides Laboratory orientation for new UHC clinic staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a Bachelor of Science and satisfaction of the
laboratory supervisory requirements of the State of Georgia
Rules and Regulations for Licensure of Clinical Laboratories as
well as four (4) years of pertinent clinical laboratory
experience as a medical technologist/clinical laboratory
scientist with two (2)years of supervisory experience.
Certification as a MT(ASCP) or equivalent, required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Extensive technical knowledge in the field of clinical
laboratory science.
Skills in organization, management, and communication.
Awareness of JCAHO accreditation requirements and government
regulations.
