Bacteriologist Duties
SUMMARY
This is responsible technical and supervisory work in the
bacteriological analysis of milk and milk products. An employee
allocated to this class of work supervises the operation of a
laboratory engaged in performing bacteriological analysis of
milk and milk products. Work is performed under general
direction of the Assistant State Veterinarian, Georgia
Department of Agriculture in coordination with the College of
Veterinary Medicine.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans, coordinates, and supervises the operation of a laboratory
performing bacteriological analysis of milk and milk products.
Conducts aseptic collection of quarter milk samples.
Isolates and identifies pathogenic micro-organisms responsible
for mastitic conditions in milk.
Cultures milk on specially prepared isolation media.
Observes and records growth motility, morphology, and staining
characteristics of propagated bacteria and their biochemical
reactions on various media.
Tests antibiotic sensitivity of representative cultures.
Collects, prepares, stains, and counts white blood cells in milk
from composite tank samples.
Prepares various types of bacteriological laboratory tests such
as the California Mastitis Test, Milk Quality Test, Wisconsin
Mastitis Test, Catalese Test, and Whiteside Test.
Recommends methods and procedures to be utilized in laboratory
analysis.
Prepares stains and reagent solutions.
Recommends the purchase of various laboratory supplies and
equipment.
Prepares case reports of laboratory results.
Maintains various laboratory records and prepares periodic and
special reports of laboratory operations.
Performs related duties as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited college or university with major
course work in bacteriology and thorough experience related to
this class of work; or any equivalent combination of training
and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of bacteriology and the techniques and
procedures of laboratory analysis.
Considerable knowledge of the basic principles of laboratory
science.
Ability to supervise the work of subordinate technical
personnel.
Ability to assemble material and present data with clarity and
scientific accuracy.
Ability to exercise good judgement in appraising situations and
making decisions.
