Medical Lab Technician IV Duties
SUMMARY
This is technical work in directing and performing routine and
non-standardized tests and examinations in a clinical laboratory
under general supervision.
Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of
standard and specialized examinations and tests, and for
instructing lower level technical personnel. Work is performed
independently within established methods and procedures, but on
new work detailed instructions are provided. Work is reviewed
through discussions of problems arising in the work and quality
control programs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs more difficult and complex tests and examinations and
retests where abnormal or atypical results were obtained.
Instructs and participates in the work of other technical
personnel conducting a variety of examinations and tests.
Makes chemical analyses of specimens.
Performs specialized tests and analytical procedures.
Performs hematological examinations, such as making complete
blood counts, smears for differential counts, and blood
grouping.
Assists in instructing students and technical personnel in
practical laboratory methods, techniques, and interpretations of
results through informal methods and demonstrations.
Assists in and instructs students in the proper procedures of
surgical classroom work.
Performs independent and complex research and clinical
diagnostic work.
Prepares students teaching laboratories.
May maintain scientific storeroom; orders supplies.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school, supplemented by two
years of college level work in the sciences and three (3) years
experience; or graduation from a standard high school and
completion of Clinical Laboratory course and three (3) years
experience; or graduation from a standard high school and
completion of Medical Laboratory Technician course.
Approved Clinical Laboratory Technician exam, if applicable; or
Clinical Laboratory Assistant (ASCP) registration; or Medical
Laboratory Technician (ASCP) registration or eligible.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques
used in laboratory work.
Considerable knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry,
biology, and bacteriology.
Considerable knowledge of the basic principles and procedures of
laboratory science as applied to medical diagnostic work.
Ability to make accurate observations and reports of test
results.
Ability to prepare technical reports governing procedures and
results of laboratory tests and examinations.
Skill in laboratory manipulative techniques.
