Managing Editor Duties
SUMMARY
This position has responsibility for the overall quality of
published material, and for the supervision and direction of
the activities of support staff. It coordinates publication
efforts through the editing, writing and producing of
manuals, manuscripts, journals and related materials.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversees and coordinates the publication process including
communicating with editors, authors and indexers;
Trafficking and inspecting proofs for accuracy;
Manages and supervises subordinate staff;
Serves as a liaison between the department or unit and
authors, printers, and/or publishers;
Assists in the preparation and management of the budget;
May prepare marketing and promotional materials for
forthcoming publications.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related field
and two years of experience in editing, journalism, or
editorial research OR six years of progressively responsible
experience in editing, journalism or editorial research.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Extensive knowledge of various press styles;
People, organizational and managerial skills;
Command of grammar, spelling, history and current affairs;
Working knowledge of newspaper publishing;
Working knowledge of Web-based research tools;
Knowledge of management principles and practices;
Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
