Managing Editor Columns Duties
SUMMARY
The managing editor of the university’s weekly newspaper
writes, edits, and oversees the production process for the
print version of the newspaper. He/she also is responsible
for the electronic (Web) version of the newspaper.
This position has responsibility for the overall quality of
published material, and for the supervision and direction of
the activities of support staff. It coordinates publication
efforts through the editing, writing and producing of
manuals, manuscripts, journals and related materials.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Compile/write/edit copy for Columns standing departments
(i.e., infographic, Digest, Kudos, Administrative Changes,
Campus Closeup, Retirees, Weekly Reader, Around Academe).
Write news and feature headlines for Columns articles and
cutline information for photographs. Write news and feature
articles as needed.
Oversee/coordinate production process--copyfit page layouts,
proofreading, corrections. Also electronically transmit
Columns to printer each week.
Reformat printed version of Columns (photos and articles)
each week and upload to the Columns Web site.
Maintain/monitor Columns postage budget.
Prepare and distribute annual Columns publication schedules
Oversee Columns paid subscription/renewal service.
Update Columns mailing lists. Also serve as liasion between
UGA departments and off-campus mailing service to facilitate
electronic delivery of Columns mailing labels/lists each
week
Update content of UGAToday (News Service) Web site when news
bureau manager and art director are absent
Maintain paper and electronic versions of archives for
Columns back issues
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related field
and a minimum of 4 years experience in editing, journalism
or editorial research is needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Extensive knowledge of various press styles;
People, organizational and managerial skills;
Command of grammar, spelling, history and current affairs;
Working knowledge of newspaper publishing;
Working knowledge of Web-based research tools;
Knowledge of management principles and practices;
Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
