SUMMARY

This position represents the first of two highly responsible professional and administrative positions whose work requires coordination and supervision of several communications functions to produce a sophisticated and technically complex public relations program. A person in this capacity must use considerable discretion in planning and performing a public relations program which may include writing, media relations, periodical and publications production, photography and other communications techniques to achieve specific public relations goals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Plans and executes specific public relations activities.

Writes regular and feature news stories for release to newspapers and periodicals.

Directs special events.

Conducts studies and writes and publishes pertinent reports.

May coordinate press conferences or other media programs specific to department or unit; prepares promotional materials related to publications.

Provides accurate background information on specific program to press.

May provides supervision over other public relations employees.

Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related discipline and two years directly related experience.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of public relations practices and procedures;

Knowledge of media production;

Ability to write and edit materials for publication;

Ability to interact effectively with the public and media representatives;

Ability to supervise the work of subordinates engaged in public relations duties;

Skill in the coordination of special events.
