Academic Advisor Duties
SUMMARY
This is professional and administrative work advising students
in areas of academic study. This is the third in a series of
four classifications, and is distinguished from the lower lever
positions by exercising more autonomy; coordinating and
decision-making impacting a wide scope; affecting a larger
student population resulting in great impact and exposure. Work
is reviewed under administrative supervision and may include
supervising others.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as an administrative and lead advisor in advising a large
number of students in planning a college program of study;
Develops goals and objectives for the advising unit in
conjunction with the college strategic plan;
Collaborates with other departments and/or college and central
administration to ensure a coordinated approach to student
recruitment and retention;
Develops and produces supplementary advising aids and projects.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a Bachelor's degree in field appropriate to area
of assignment and five years appropriate experience OR Master's
degree and two years of appropriate experience; OR seven years
of progressively responsible experience; OR any equivalent
combination of experience and/or education from which comparable
knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the University's rules, regulations,
policies and procedures pertaining to a specific degree program;
Thorough knowledge of course offerings and requirements of a
specific area of academic study;
Effective problem solving and interpersonal communication
skills;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships;
Knowledge and competence in computer skills;
Ability to interpret policies and procedures and effectively
communicate these to students and faculty;
Ability to plan, assign, and direct the work of other employees;
Ability to apply original and creative thinking to develop and
improve methods and procedures. |
