Materials Handler Duties
SUMMARY
Performs manual and clerical duties related to shipping,
receiving, inspecting, storing, issuing and delivering a variety
of materials, equipment and supplies. Incumbents perform many of
the same duties and the Materials Handler I, but are
distinguished in that incumbents exercise decision making and
independent judgement due to a broader knowledge of the
materials handling operation and provide on the job training and
problem solving to others. May be required to lift heavy
objects.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Counts, weighs or measures incoming or outgoing items to compare
identifying information and variety against bill of lading,
invoices, orders or other records
Examines incoming shipments for damage of shortages and
corresponds with shipper to rectify
Completes paperwork or forms required for documentation
Prepares materials for shipping and determines method of
shipment
Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet
jacks, hand trucks or dollies to move stock or reorganize
storage
Participates in routing, inspecting and delivering various
materials to customers
May perform vehicle inspections
Participates in ordering and purchasing standard stock items
Utilizes computerized or automated systems to accomplish tasks
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
One year of shipping/receiving experience or any equivalent
combination of experience and/or education from which comparable
knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Valid
driver's license may be required in some instances.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of automated or computerized system operation
Knowledge of record keeping practices
Knowledge of safety practices
Skill in lifting heavy objects
Skill in operating forklift or other material handling equipment
Skill in operating large vehicles in tight and congested areas
Skill in both verbal and written communication
