Glass Blower Duties
SUMMARY
This is semi-skilled technical work at the apprentice level in
the fabrication and repair of scientific glass apparatus.
Work involves training-type duties in the fabrication,
modification, and repair of a wide variety of scientific glass
apparatus. As training progresses, an incumbent participates in
advising and consulting with faculty and research personnel on
problems arising in the design and use of glass apparatus. Work
assignments are received orally and in the form of sketches or
blueprints, and are carried out with some technical independence
under the direction of a journeyman glassblower. Work is
reviewed through inspection and observation of results.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Fabricates a variety of glass apparatus and equipment for
research and instructional purposes.
Uses special equipment for fusing, turning, cutting, bending,
and calibrating glass; employs special techniques in fusing
glass to metal and other materials.
Consults with journeyman glassblower on problems arising in the
design and use of glass apparatus; advises on feasibility of
suggested uses of glass; assists in the design of apparatus.
Develops experimental apparatus from conversations and rough
sketches; repairs and modifies standard and experimental glass
apparatus.
Assists in ordering equipment and materials for glassblowing
shop; maintains cost accounts for individual jobs.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard high school, supplemented by
vocational training in glassblowing; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and
practices of the glassblowing trade.
Some knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the
trade.
Some knowledge of the laboratory and shop techniques in
scientific glassblowing.
Ability to work from oral instructions, rough sketches, and
blueprints.
Ability to learn to execute precision work in glass.
Ability to diagnose problems and make constructive
recommendations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships with faculty members and research personnel. |
