Locksmith Duties
SUMMARY
This is skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and
repair of locks and keys.
Work involves installing, repairing, and maintaining a variety
of types of locks throughout the university; also the making of
keys and the repairing of other building hardware. Work is
received in the form of job orders identifying location, or by
emergency calls, and is carried out with considerable
independence. Work is checked through review by supervisory
personnel for conformity with accepted standards of workmanship.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Installs, repairs, and replaces all types of locks; changes
settings of locks; makes keys and master keys.
Picks locks and opens safes as requested in emergency
situations.
Repairs, rebuilds, and replaces glass doors, door closures,
floor hinges, and similar hardware.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and some
experience as a journeyman locksmith; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, and practices
used in the locksmith trade.
Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of a variety
of lock and key systems.
Ability to work from oral and written instructions, sketches,
and diagrams.
Ability to maintain good relationships with personnel of other
departments.
Skill in the use of standard tools and equipment of the
locksmith trade.
