Piano Technician Duties
SUMMARY
This is highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of
pianos utilized by the institution.
An employee allocated to this class of work is responsible for
repairing, refinishing, and tuning pianos using specialized
tools. Work requires the exercise of considerable independent
judgement and creativity. Work is reviewed through conferences,
inspections, and observation of results.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Repairs, tunes, and refinishes pianos using specialized tools
and gauges.
Tests components such as keyboards, pedals, and action assembly.
Detaches action mechanism and replaces faulty, work or broken
parts.
Replaces broken or missing strings; tunes strings.
Examines wooden parts for splits, warps, and other defects.
Repairs, replaces, resurfaces, and refinishes wooden parts.
Maintains accurate inventory and maintenance records.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school;
considerable experience in the repair, maintenance, and
operation of pianos; and a minimum rating of craftsman in the
Piano Technicians Guild, Inc.; or any equivalent combination of
training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the operation and servicing of various
types of pianos.
Ability to diagnose problems and take corrective measures.
Skill in the use and care of tools employed in the repair of
pianos.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
