Plumber Duties
SUMMARY
This is manual work at the journeyman level in the installation,
maintenance, and repair of plumbing and heating systems.
Work involves performance of skilled plumbing tasks in
maintaining, repairing, and servicing a variety of fixtures and
equipment. Routine maintenance, service, and repair work are
performed independently. Assignments are normally received
orally or through written work orders. Work is inspected on
completion for conformity to instructions and quality of work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Repairs and inserts valves and ball cocks; packs faucets;
repairs waste, sewage, and drainage pipes; replaces broken
fixtures and installs new fixtures; caulks and packs joints.
Installs and maintains air conditioning equipment, steam, and
hot water heating systems, and sprinkler systems; renews pipes,
valves, and fittings on pumps.
Cleans out drains and obstructions in waste and sewage pipes.
Repairs broken valves, hydrants, service pipes, washing
machines, and drinking fountains.
Operates pipe cutters, reamers, threading machines, sewer tapes
and cables, and other plumbing tools and equipment.
Keeps records of work and makes reports.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and
experience as a journeyman plumber; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the standard tools, methods,
practices, and materials of the plumbing trade.
Considerable knowledge of prevailing plumbing codes.
Some knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the
work.
Ability to understand and work from general instructions and
specifications, and to follow blue prints and sketches.
Skill in the use of tools, materials, and equipment used in the
plumbing trade.
