Roofer Duties
SUMMARY
This is manual work at the journeyman level in the repair,
maintenance, and installation of roofs and flashings.
Work involves repairing, maintaining, and removing roofs and the
installation of new ones. Assignments are received through oral
instructions prior to and during the progress of a job. Work is
reviewed while in progress and upon completion.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Inspects composition shingles, slate shingles, roofing tiles,
built up, and metal roofs for leaks.
Removes old roofs, installs roof insulation, felts bitumens and
performs repairs as indicated to leaking roofs.
Installs composition shingles, slate shingles, roofing tiles,
and flashings.
Applies cold process roof coatings.
Erects rigging.
Determines materials required for roof repairs, flashing
repairs, and the installation of new roofs.
May supervise other workmen and laborers in the repair and
replacement of roofs.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and
considerable experience in roofing operations; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, and
methods utilized in roof repair and installation.
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety requirements of
the trade.
Knowledge of various roofing materials and standard
specifications for different roof types.
Ability to remove and install roofs.
Ability to erect necessary rigging.
Ability to work at heights and on flat and inclined surfaces.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
Ability to climb ladders and set up work requirements in a safe
manner.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Skill in the use of appropriate tools and equipment.
