Upholsterer Duties
SUMMARY
This is skilled work in the repair and upholstery of furniture
and the interiors of vehicles.
Work involves performance of varied maintenance and repair work
of a specialized nature. Employee exercises some initiative in
selection of patterns and designs of upholstery materials.
Judgement is required as to the methods of repair. Work includes
skillful operation of sewing machines, upholstery stuffing
machines, power saws, and other power machines. Work is
performed independently except for general supervision.
Assignments are received by work orders or instructions from an
administrative superior. Work is inspected upon completion for
quality.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Re-upholsters lounge and office furniture; repairs furniture by
refinishing, gluing joints, and replacing casters.
Repairs and recovers seats and other upholstered parts of
vehicles such as trucks, automobiles, and tractors.
Repairs venetian blind, window shades, and performs other
general repairs.
Makes canvas and cloth items, such as bags and covers.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and
considerable experience in upholstery; or any equivalent
combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, tools,
materials, and equipment for upholstering.
Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of upholstering work
and of necessary safety precautions.
Ability to make upholstery and other repairs to furniture and
interiors of vehicles.
Ability to understand and work from general instructions.
Skill in the selection of upholstery materials and in use and
care of upholstery tools and equipment.
